Net Worth Nexus and Empower Personal Dashboard
A free net worth and portfolio dashboard published by a large retirement and wealth-management firm. The tools are free; the business behind them is advisory.
The short answer
Empower's dashboard is free and its retirement planner is better than anything we have. Worth knowing what the free product is for: signing up asks for a phone number, and the page offers help from professionals. If you want closed-trade analysis without that, this is the trade we are offering.
What each one costs
Free plan with up to 10 manual accounts and net worth tracking, no card. Pro at $4.99 a month, $59.88 a year, adds investment sync and the realized P&L engine. Nexus at $9.99 adds banks and cards.
Empower's own FAQ: “Nothing! The dashboard experience and financial tools are completely free and take just a few minutes to set up.” Signing up requires an email address and a phone number.
Investment analytics
What the app can tell you about trades you have already closed.
Realized gain and loss per position
Unrealized change tells you what a holding is worth today. Realized tells you what you actually made or lost when you sold.
Per-position realized gain and loss, FIFO lot matched, on the Pro plan.
Empower describes portfolio analysis as “See how your portfolio performs. Understand your risk level, and where your money is invested.” Realized gains are not named there.
empower.com/toolsLot matching method stated
Two engines can report different gains on identical trades depending on which shares they treat as sold. The method has to be stated to be checkable.
FIFO, applied per position and per account, and named in the interface.
No lot-matching method is named on Empower's tools page.
empower.com/toolsOptions as contracts
One contract is a hundred shares. An engine that treats it as one unit reports a cost basis off by a factor of a hundred.
Contracts matched through expiration, assignment and exercise, at the correct per-contract multiplier, including mini options.
Options are not named among the account types or tools listed on Empower's tools page.
empower.com/toolsOptions behaviour analytics
Whether you are paid for the risk you take: which expirations earn, whether you average into losers, how long you sit on winners versus losers.
Yield by expiration horizon, averaging up versus down, and hold-time difference between winners and losers.
No options analytics are described on Empower's tools page.
empower.com/toolsStock splits detected
A four-for-one split multiplies your share count without a trade. An engine that reads it as a purchase corrupts every gain figure for that holding from then on.
Forward and reverse splits are detected and the affected position is flagged as unadjusted.
Corporate actions and splits are not mentioned on Empower's tools page.
empower.com/toolsRefuses a number it cannot stand behind
The failure that costs you money is not a missing number. It is a confident wrong one.
A position whose P&L the engine cannot stand behind is labelled and left out of the totals and the win rate, rather than shown as a result.
No data-completeness labelling is described on Empower's tools page.
empower.com/toolsPlanning
Empower's real strength, and it is a large one.
Retirement planning
The single most valuable free tool in this category.
No retirement projection or scenario modelling.
“Plan for life's big events as you test-drive retirement scenarios”, free.
empower.com/toolsAccess to human advisers
Some questions want a person, and we do not employ any.
Email support only. We do not give financial advice, and the app's daily read is educational by design.
“Real people answer your money questions… get help from professionals for your next move.”
empower.com/toolsWhat signing up asks for
Worth knowing before you start, either way.
A name, username, email address and password. No phone number. The demo needs none of them.
networth.nexus/featuresEmpower's FAQ: “You'll need to answer a few questions and provide an email and phone number to get started.”
empower.com/toolsCoverage and access
What each one connects to, and where you can open it.
Account types
Retirement plans are where most people's money actually is.
Brokerages, retirement and crypto through SnapTrade; banks, cards and loans through Quiltt.
networth.nexus/connections“IRAs, 401(k) and other retirement plans, investments, mortgages, loans, savings and checking accounts, credit cards, and more.”
empower.com/toolsCost
The honest comparison: theirs is free.
A free plan exists, but the realized P&L and options engine is on Pro at $4.99 a month.
networth.nexus/featuresWhere Empower Personal Dashboard is the better choice
Not a formality. If one of these is what you came for, buy theirs. You will be happier, and we would rather you found that out here than after a refund request.
The dashboard and every tool on it cost nothing. Our equivalent analysis is $4.99 a month. If price is the deciding factor, this row settles it.
A full retirement planner with scenario modelling, free. We have nothing comparable and none is planned.
Empower's page offers help from professionals, on the phone. We cannot do that, and we do not give advice.
Empower Annuity Insurance Company of America is a large, long-established firm. We are a new company, and that is a real difference in risk.
Where every figure came from
Each page below was opened and read on the date shown. Nothing here is quoted from memory, a review site, or Empower Personal Dashboard's marketing elsewhere.
Rows describing Empower Personal Dashboard always cite a page. Rows describing Net Worth Nexus mostly do not. We are the primary source for our own software, and a link back to our own marketing would not make the claim any more checkable. The demo is the honest version of that check: it runs the real interface, and you do not need an account to open it.
